"How now Brown Cow" Vintage Signed Art Pottery Unique Sculpture

Here's the winner in the Bovine Beauty Contest! This adorable cow was potted by noted English potter Annie Parker Smith, who was working in the Seventies and Eighties, producing a superb small range of unique pottery animal sculptures and I think this is easily the most dazzling. The beautiful and gentle cow lies quietly and at peace, garlanded with flowers and lustred pearls, her tail lazily flicking against her haunch, while two blue birds like kookaburras, are perched without fear - one on her hindquarters and one singing merrily atop her head! The cow and her bird companions are bursting with character and brilliantly painted, parts with lustre glazes and the cow has liquid, tender eyes. Lustre pearls are strewn across her body. All this fabulous work of art is in excellent condition, just as she left her artist's studio. The modelling on this animal is outstanding, quite clearly based on long and careful life studies, you can almost see her ears flicking! An extra special touch is the continuation of the modelling to the underside in the manner of Japanese netsuke.

Fully signed and dated by the artist and fully titled, all in incised cursive script into the clay.

A totally enchanting piece of ceramic sculpture.

Size: 4.75" high to tip of horns x 7" wide. Condition: She is in wonderful condition: there are no chips or cracks, her fragile horns, the delicate flowers and the beaks of the little birds are all intact and undamaged.
