1948 Ads - JANTZEN Sweaters ~ 'Merry Xmas' / STUDEBAKER (on reverse)

This full-colour, vintage fashion ad features an artist-signed, Pete Hawley illustration of a "couldn't be better looking!" young man and woman enjoying a Christmas kiss. The sweater-clad couple is framed in a window, pulling down a blind for extra privacy by the Christmas tree. This Jantzen Knitting Mills ad - better known for swimwear - also depicts other styles of their jumpers made of the "finest 100% virgin worsted wool ... from Australia". Pictured styles, in a variety of "colors by the great color genius, Dorothy Liebes", are: Chief, Ranger, Letterman, Speedstar, Olympianne, Collegianne - complete with the original retail prices (a reference resource for vintage clothing collectors).

Or if one prefers, the reverse features an automobile ad for the Studebaker Land Cruiser - "Motoring's new celebrity in low-cost mileage!". The striking, yellow car - "First in style...first in vision...first by far with a postwar car" - is front and centre at a "Hollywood Premiere" scene photographed at the Carthay Circle Theatre, a now-demolished Spanish Colonial Revival-style "movie palace" in Los Angeles, California.

Many vintage ads can act as "time capsules", reflecting the styles and sensibilities of a particular era. Christmas ads, perhaps due to the traditional, "family" nature of the holiday, often evoke a stronger sense of nostalgia. They can stir childhood memories of simpler, more sentimental times.
