1938 Ads - GRACE LINE Caribbean Cruises ~ 'Ping Pong Pirates' / GENERAL ELECTRIC (on reverse)
The 1930s Grace Line travel & tourism ad features a full-colour illustration of a pair of puzzled pirates pondering over a ping-pong table. These tattooed treasure hunters seem to be befuddled by the shipboard recreation of table tennis.
The ad copy details the destinations and features of Grace Line's "Santa" Ships cruising the Caribbean Sea. The pictured "Pirates of the Caribbean" could visit Curacao, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama Canal, Jamaica, and Haiti. While onboard they could enjoy a buccaneer makeover at the "Dorothy Gray Beauty Salon" or catch a movie; one of the "Pre-Release Talkies".
Or if one prefers, the reverse depicts a black & white ad, titled "More Goods for More People at Less Cost", heralding the 60th anniversary of General Electric. The ad copy salutes the advances that G-E science and technology have made in allowing industry to manufacture better products at lower prices. This Depression-era advertisement compares conditions in 1938 to 1929 (the year of the stock market crash) citing radios, electric washing machines, and electric fans.
The vintage travel ad measures 10" x 6 3/4" (approx.). This piece of '30s advertising ephemera / memorabilia is printed on glossy stock with little attendant signs of use. This Thirties print ad is in excellent condition and is eminently suitable for framing.
