Spelter Figure Moreau Lamp Flower Peddler Lady French

This bronzed and polychrome spelter figural lamp was made from the original French mold of L & F Moreau (brothers Louis Auguste and Hippolyte Francois), who created the 19th century sculpture.

Figure is a barefoot girl, depicting a flower peddler or street vendor, carrying a tray with floral bouquets. Casting is made of spelter, an extremely strong and durable metal, and has the original patinated bronze finish, with contrast provided by ivory color polychrome enamel.

Base of figural is marked with the L & F Moreau signature, a round embossed fleur de lis seal "Collection Francaise Made in USA" and another round stamp or seal, but I can only see the word "PARIS". Collection Francaise Made in USA was the seal used by J.B. Hirsch & Co., who acquired the original French molds, and cast this piece early to mid 20th century.

Losses to the bronzed finish are minimal, with the largest on the front curls of her hair, or that may be just touches of the ivory paint that went astray. Most of the loss to the ivory paint is evident on the base area, and there are some small scattered chips on the top part of the figure, though none is serious enough to cause concern. The ivory paint has some darker highlights on the painted surface, perhaps to give it a distressed look. The back of the flower tray has a splash of the ivory color behind one bouquet. There are no major faults or damage. Piece has not been retouched and there are no cracks or repairs. We are only able to upload nine images on the site, but I do have other photos of some of these areas and will be happy to email them.

It is possible the cord was replaced at some point and the socket is not original to the lamp. I am not certain whether it had a socket with some type of candle bulb, a glass shade, or a fabric shade originally. Measurement from bottom of base to top of head is 19 inches and 24 1/2 inches to top of light socket. Base has a 6 1/4 inch diameter. Lamp is quite heavy, weighing nearly 10 pounds.

We have a matching lamp (same base) also listed, subject is a boy with fishing pole, signed by Aug. Moreau. These were acquired from the same home.
