Vintage Lucite Metal Box Purse Flirt Scene Medallion Rhinestones Tyrolean Handbag

This is some find! Tyrolean and Toro were companies that made some of the best lucite box purses, so popular during the 1950s and highly collected today. Thanks to the Bag Lady Emporium, this box bag has been identified as designed and made by Tyrolean of New York, and originally would have been sold with an attached cardboard signature tag as the only marking.

This box bag has a gold tone metal hinged frame and handle, with the front and back made of a pearly white lucite inlay. The front has a hand painted medallion bezel set in a rhinestone encrusted metal setting. The painting is a copy of a romantic flirt scene by artist Fragonard, featuring a lady being serenaded on a lute by her gentleman companion, with a pastoral scene as background. The ornate openwork and rhinestone studded metal clasp is also topped with a less distinct portrait.

The inside of this delightful box handbag is lined in a padded ivory white taffeta, with ruffled full width pockets on each side, perfect for a comb and any other small accessories that m'lady may take to the prom or ball, and this sure would be a talking piece at a cocktail party. The inner sections of the metal frame are lined with a golden taffeta.

The box could also be used to store jewelry or other treasures, or as a luxurious travel accessory, maybe for a bride to take on honeymoon.

Dimensions are 8 x 7 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches on the box part and the handle is 5 x 4 inches. Condition is excellent with the inside so clean it looks unused, though there is some wear to the metal frame and handle. The lucite and medallions and rhinestones are in excellent condition as well.
