Schafer and Vater Jasperware Box Hair Receiver Fairy and Cupid Cherub Heart
A Victorian - Art Nouveau era jasperware bisque porcelain dresser jar made by Schafer & Vater as a hair receiver. It is heart shaped and has a sage green bisque porcelain base with white cameo bas relief depicting a kneeling winged fairy, holding a bow and arrow over the heart shaped opening of the hair receptacle, and with a winged cherub, perhaps Cupid, hovering on the opposite side, with arms reached out to the bow and arrow.
Additional decoration includes flying birds and various floral and foliage bas relief around the lid and jar.
Measuring about 4 inches long & wide. Incised on the bottom are the numbers 3121. Both the jar and its lid are in excellent condition with just the usual undulations, pitting and color variations characteristic of these hand made antique jasperware bisque pottery pieces.
Hair receivers were popular vanity accessories with ladies of that period to store hair removed from their brushes & combs, which enhanced the buns and other bouffant hair styles that were fashionable during Victorian times.
A delightful Vanity Collectible item. This decorative box could also be used as a potpourri container.
