English Silver Serving Dish Removable Ornate Handle

A little background: some years ago, I purchased two convertible lids and three bases from an estate, heavy Edwardian period English silver plate, all with beaded rims and removable handles. The lids are intended to be used as serving dishes as well, if necessary, removing the handle and flipping over.

The bases were marked; the lids were not, only numbered. Long after I had sold them, the fellow disposing of the estate found the third lid. I contacted the buyer, but either they had changed e-mail addresses, or moved on, because I never heard back.

By that point, I no longer remembered the maker, so what we have here is – a wonderful extremely heavy English silver plated convertible lid; handle removes to allow lid to be flipped over and utilized as a serving dish on its own, and would originally have nested for more compact storage in the sideboard. The handle alone is amazingly heavy, and people now collect these to use as striking, eccentric napkin rings. The base measures 11 ¼” x 8 ½” x 1 ½”. While in excellent condition with no plate loss, the beaded decoration on the outside, on the lid top, has holes or misses in several of the beads as shown – not a distraction but present. Freshly hand polished and ready for immediate use.
