1940 Trifari Rhinestone Enamel Fur Clip-

This vintage Trifari fur clip has patent number 12298 dating it from August 20, 1940 and making the designer the renowned Alfred Philippe. Philippe, as you probably know, revolutionized costume jewelry and as head designer for Trifari, brought them to the top of the jewelry “chain”. Fur clips, originally called double-pronged clips or pin clips are among the most versatile of accoutrements, way beyond being used on fur which is ever so de rigueur these days. They can be worn on a hat, pocketbook or scarf, as a barrette or pony tail holder, to close a V neck blouse, on a lapel, or hanging as a pendant, to name but a few possibilities. The basic components, before we get to specifics, are pave set crystal clear rhinestones and six glass moonstone cabochons of varying sizes, four large and two smaller. The basic shape of the clip can be seen as floral with a leaf on a tree having fruit hang from it with slender enamel branches holding the leaves or even if you are daring, a shield with areas of open spaces. The strands of the clip are replete with pave clear stones and each of the four larger moonstone cabochon has a cap sitting atop it, giving the appearance of a holder for the large stones. As can be seen from the pictures, the design curves and undulates throughout its entire area. The clip is signed Trifari and is about 3” in length. This vintage fur clip is a real beauty and a slice of design jewelry history.
