Kotex Ad, December 1943: Quiz for Women Absentees

This original and unusual ad by Kotex is from the December, 1943, issue of the Ladies Home Journal. The authentic vintage advertisement is headlined as a “Quiz for Women Absentees who can’t keep going on ‘problem days.’ Do’s and don’ts to help you feel better and stay on the job.” A tag on the top shows a note which stated that “A war-plant nurse wrote Kotex” expressing concern about women missing work during their period, or rather, their “problem days.” The ad gives advice on a variety of related issues such as cramps, lifting, taking showers, and drinking cocktails. Kotex offers the reader an opportunity to order free a 24-page booklet entitled “That Day is Here Again” as well as “free jumbo charts on Menstrual Physiology. This is a rare glimpse into the world of women who worked for the war effort.

The reverse side of the Kotex Ad features a whitening and ironing product ad. The advertisement was carefully removed from the magazine and is in excellent condition. It has not been trimmed, so there is plenty of margin for framing. It measures 10 ¾ by 13 ¾ inches. This is a unique and unusual 1940’s advertisement with a glimpse into life at home during World War II. It will be a wonderful addition to vintage décor.
