The General 4-4-0, 1971 Avon Locomotive MIB

This wonderful bit of railroadiana was produced by Avon between 1971 and 1972 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a famous Civil War locomotive chase. The dark blue glass decanter is created in the shape of the famous Civil War locomotive, the General 4-4-0, with its 4 wheels in the front, 4 in the middle, and none in the rear.

The story of the General is told on the side of the box and describes "a daring and elaborate masquerade to steal the Confederate locomotive" by Union soldiers. It also explains how the Confederates regained possession of the train engine. The decanter is 2 inches wide and 7 ¼ inches in length including the glass decanter and the plastic end cap. It held 5 ½ ounces of Tai Winds after shave but is empty. The box measures 8 ½ by 4 ½ by 2 ¼ inches. The locomotive comes with the original packing material and, except for being empty, is in excellent condition. The box is decorated with an artist's version of the 4-4-0 General and is also in excellent condition.

Avon traces its origins to the California Perfume Company, which began operations in 1886. This company which started in a one-room lab in New York City now sells its products in every country of the world. Vintage Avon products are collectors' favorites.
