Vintage Print by Lillie Agnew-Signed - Grandma and Bible

A little history on the artist:
For most of her life, Lillie created artwork, ranging from portraits to prints to landscapes. She painted on canvas, wood, pillows and bottles. Her work has been featured on a calendar.
Lillie is self-taught. She showed talent at a young age, but she really didn't really pursue it until the mid-1950s, when the Agnews moved to St. Louis from Sherman, Texas."I joined the South County Artists Association," Lillie said. "There were just a few of us then."
She is a practitioner of the "realistic" school of art. At that time, though, abstract art was making all of the news. "In those days, if you painted realistically, you weren't considered an artist," Lillie said. "It was all abstract. I once tried it, and it just wasn't for me."But her art did capture some attention. She won first prize in a competition for her painting of the Climatron at Shaw's Garden.
Lillie once went to a critique by a full-time artist. She was nervous, feeling out of place with the other fledging artists."My picture wasn't framed, and some of the artists studied in Europe," Lillie said. "I just wanted to take my painting and go home. He looked at it for a while and didn't say anything. I was thinking to myself, 'Just get it over with and let me go home.'"Instead, the artist said, "I can't see anything wrong."He then looked at her and said, "You're the kind of people (self-taught artists) who make us nervous." Lillie is now 95 years old and has recently celebrated her 77 wedding anniversary. She no longer paints because of eyesight problems.
