Mata Ortiz pot – signed Chela Acosta

Size: Measurements are 9 3/4" tall with a circumference of 21 1/4". Condition: This is a new pot in very good condition. We see a few very small imperfections at the bottom part of the pot. These are spots that either didn't get completely smoothed out before firing – or possibly where tiny bubbles of air popped during the firing process.

As are all pots made in Mata Ortiz, a small village in Chihuahua, Mexico, this pot was built by hand starting with clay dug in the region. The pots are polished and then painted, using long, fine brushes made either with horse or child's hair (for the very fine work). The colors used are natural mineral pigments. Depending on desired effect, the painted pot may be polished again. Once fully polished and decorated, the pots are fired in a simple kiln – they are placed on bricks and covered with a metal or clay pot. Cow dung or cottonwood is piled up around the bucket, which burns at a hot temperature for 30 to 60 minutes. If all goes well, a beautiful pot like this one emerges.
