Large Mata Ortiz pot – signed Israel Sandoval
Size: Measurements are 6 3/4" high by about 13" in diameter. Circumference at the widest part is 38".
Condition: This is a new pot in very good condition. The painting and textured decoration are carefully executed, but we feel that the polish is somewhat less carefully done. There are a few small imperfections here and there where the clay was not completely smoothed before firing, or where tiny bubbles burst during the firing process.
As are all pots made in Mata Ortiz, a small village in Chihuahua, Mexico, this pot was built by hand starting with clay dug in the region. The pots are polished and then painted, using long, fine brushes made either with horse or child's hair (for the very fine work). The colors used are natural mineral pigments. Depending on desired effect, the painted pot may be polished again. Once fully polished and decorated, the pots are fired in a simple kiln – they are placed on bricks and covered with a metal or clay pot. Cow dung or cottonwood is piled up around the bucket, which burns at a hot temperature for 30 to 60 minutes. If all goes well, a beautiful pot like this one emerges.
