I believe that this tool from the early 1900's was used for scraping, removing old wall paper or plastering. There are worn marks on the blade. I could only decipher & Smith. Due to the construction and design this tool was used for a much heavier task than chopping food. The main piece of metal holding the plate in place is split to hold the plate in place and then continues as one rod inside the wooden handle.
