This interesting old Devon Motto Ware, sometimes call Cottage Ware, or Torquay Ware, Sugar and Creamer, is terra cotta made from the red clay found in that area of England. They are slip decorated with their famous cottage between the trees design, in green, tan and blue on a cream ground. Each piece has a sgraffito decoration, in the form of a motto or saying, in which the words are scratched through the unfired slip, to show the terra cotta below.
