When I bought this scarf the lady told me that her cousin's husband often brought back gifts and souvenir items from Europe where he was stationed after the war. She especially liked items from France, which was the country of choice. People who wanted to travel but couldn't get there, settled for the next best thing. I do believe that this neck piece is silk however I'm no expert on fabrics.
