Henry Chapman Mercer opened his Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in 1898. He was a major producer of art pottery tiles for commissions up and down the east coast until his death in 1930. The pottery was run by the head potter, Frank Swain, until his death in 1954, when it passed to his nephew. The pottery was closed in 1964, but re-opened 1974 by Wayne Bates.
